DOMINIC MANCUSO GROUP
Tony Zorzi, the guitarist who graced my Juno awarded record Comfortably Mine. I'll never forget the day we laid out over 30 stringed instruments in the studio. We were like kids in a candy store. We dug deep into these sessions, creating and exploring new ideas and approaches. Since then, our relationship has grown, defining this project’s harmonic and melodic direction. Zorzi is such a tastey guitar player!
I met Chendy on a double bill at The Junos in 2010. What a talent! Originally from Cuba, Rosendo "Chendy" Leon is one of Canada’s most sought after percussionists. We express a mutual respect for each other, as well as share a love of all music and cultures. I simply adore him! The rest is history.
Driving our group’s sound, while holding the low end down, is Mexican bassist -composer Francisco “Paco” Luviano. 'Mi Carnal' - my brother. I've been performing with Paco for many years and in so many contexts. I don't even have to look at him - he's always got my back covered! That is critical in the bass department. This rhythm section’s vast vocabulary and affinity for my tunes makes the groove sophisticated, seductive and never overbearing. They make it feel right, all the time. They are featured members in this group, and are probably one of the most grooviest rhythm sections in Toronto. Lucky me.
Complimenting the core four are two of Canada’s most sought after musicians; John Johnson aka "JJ" on sax and woodwinds, and Jerry "Poppa Bear" Caringi on B3 organ, accordion, piano and vocals. Cutting these guys loose brings so much tonal range and improvisational facility to our sound. The CD Sub Urban Gypsy truly revealed the group’s musical prowes and wandering spirit!
DMG is featured on the New Mancuso | Mezza: Dances In My Mind recording. They are featured with the eclectic chamber sound quite successfully. From bass clarinet to mandolin, to world percussion and accordion; DMG migrates through genres effortlessly. Feel free to read the group's short individual bios below.
